Featured Celebrity Samaritan: Meghan Markle for One Young World

Actress Meghan Markle has been in the news lately as bits and pieces of stories swirl around about her reported courtship with Prince Harry. But, what catches Celebrity Optimist’s eye is the fact that just last month, Meghan was giving her time to an important cause. She served as a counselor for the One Young World organization.

One Young World, as detailed on their website, is “a UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.” The organization holds yearly Summits in order to gather “the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organizations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counselors. At the Summit, delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces.”

Markle was present at the Summit, which was held in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, and served as a counselor alongside Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, China Central Television (CCTVNews) broadcaster James Chau, and Pakistani poet and writer Fatima Bhutto.

It was not Meghan’s first time attending the Summit. She spoke at the Summit in Dublin two years ago about gender inequality and how it has personally affected her as an actress, including as the star of her hit show, “Suits.”

Previous One Young World Summits were held in different cities around the world, including Bangkok, Johannesburg, Pittsburgh, London, Zurich, with an Environment Expert Event in Tucson. The 2017 Summit is scheduled to be held in Bogotá, Colombia in October 2017.
